How soon we forget...

Well I started the blog to document what I had done as a first in 2011....yet forgot to write it down. I guess blogging takes more time than I though. Hump.

Anyway...since April it has been a great year. While a lot of great firsts have happened, so has a lot of great learning. I think I can really look back on 2011 and realize I learned about how I need to live for the rest of my life. The word need is a strong one, but I am going to use it.

There are many things in life that want, but only a very few that we need. In life I need....
1) Jason. He is the yin to my nutzo yang
2) My family. The Hurshs are a strange group, indeed; but I need to them to feel like myself. As the family anthem says, "I'll proudly stand up and admit that we're related"
3) Sleep and Down Time. As much as I like to push to the next thing and jam pack every minute of the day, I really need to chill. It makes me a better me
4) Food. Duh...this is a no brainer
5) Time with my real friends. The people who I don't have to apologize for being me.

Yep... That is about it. I need those things to keep going.

It is Christmas time and there are so many things to want. Although, I always should remember what I want versus what I NEED.

The Day After

Well today is the Day After, the Day After Little 500. This year the whole weekend needs to sit in a little longer. So I am going to save writing about it for a few. Needless to say it was fun, amazing, and how I love it.

Right now I want to think about getting more active. I asked Jason to clean up my town cruiser for my birthday. A first, I asked for something bike related. I broke my own rule, by saying no more gifts from QBP. But really, I am so hoping he listens. I want a lot of first times to be had on that bike this summer. I want to ride it dinner, farmers market, the grocery, etc.

The weather is almost to summer!! Come on Sunshine

The Best Time of the Year

When you graduate college you normally think about going back to campus in the fall when the leaves have changed, you wear a new hooded sweatshirt, watch football, and think about how great life was back then. Not in this house...we have the same feeling towards the end of March when Little 5 season is upon us. Little 500 is such a huge part of our house in the Spring.

Just a few weeks ago  I thought to myself,  I am 27 years old why do I still care so much? When I talk to people about our involvement in the race, or more importantly why Jason still dedicates so much time, effort, and emotion to it there is always surprise and confusion on their face.  A few weeks ago, I didn't really have an answer to give them or myself.

So in the effort of wanting to do 2011 differently, I told Jason I wanted to cook dinner for the team and go to quals. This spun into making dinner for the team the night before, staying down at the union, going out to Nicks with our friends still in town, and watching the Cutters qual at the early hour of 8 am.
Final Lap!

POLE!
This is where I found my answer. There is no other way to put it than...It Just Feels Good. My sister once told me that you are always in a better mood in Bloomington. This was in the midst of her life literally falling apart, and then she went to Bloomington for the night and all was better again.

The revolving team of young men never ceases to amaze me. They are so much better people than I was at their age. They respect each other, love each other, and have fun. Jason at this point in his life, gets so much more out of spending time with them compared to getting drunk with his friends. That is fun too, but not fulfilling.

Then there is Jim Kirkham. I can not write something about him that will say it all or will make not cry at this moment. I love Jim and my life would not be the same without him. He challeged my husband to be a man. In every sense of what that means. His GF Linda is also equally great. Talking to her about life, childbirth, and being a Mom makes me feel like I can just figure it out. It is not only fun but a beautiful process to embrace.

It is been fun to see how my own relationships with the alums of the Cutters and the race has evolved. I see them and it is not like no time has passed. I also love the women they have chosen as life or maybe even just current partners. There are years between but it doesn't feel like it. We get excited about the same stuff, feel the pain of loving a bike rider,  and all just love being active in life.

As I was at Nicks talking to all of them, I have never felt so myself. I talked about stuff that I normally would not have let fall out so easy, I know GASP.

The guys loved the dinner, I loved the company, and my husband was alive. The stress of normal life has got him down, but little 5 lifts him up.

I was so addicted to the high that I went down for ITTs all alone. Jason was in Belgium. Still the same feeling and fun.
Hank during his run

It is a good thing Little 5 is a short season because the high is so addicting. So is the fun. I cant wait to see Heather and the whole crew for the race.

GUILTY...well kind of

2011 is the year I wanted to get out and do things I had not done before, little did I know this included experiences which I didn't pick. Otherwise known as JURY DUTY.

So it all started with mail Mom brought me from home. It was a jury summons, in my maiden name at my parents house. Being the good citizen I am, I responded with all my new info. Big Mistake..HUGE.

Then I get the letter I am supposed to appear. They include quite a lengthy schedule, which I ignore. I mention it to my boss as I am leaving the day before selection...still not giving it any serious thought. Long story short...I get picked for a federal case which is scheduled to take 5 weeks. I cry, I freak out, I get pissed, I get nervous, etc. I am also a little honored to get picked and interested about the case.

3.5 weeks later it all ends. 10 defendents, 14 charges, 12 guilty, 2 not guilty.

The case was a drug case with meth and pot, with some firearms thrown in there. I learned more about the legal system, drugs, cell phone taping, and 15 people (my fellow jurors) I had never met before. I also met someone who I now hold in high esteem, the Judge. She is not only smart and talented, but also very cool. Another amazing women to admire who appears to have it all.

The link about the case sums it all up best and I will admit the reality of it all set in when the verdict was read. Emotional to say the least.

TERRE HAUTE — The indictment and arrest of 19 alleged methamphetamine traffickers in the Terre Haute area is expected to put a kink in the local supply chain of methamphetamine and marijuana, at least temporarily.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials are still trying to figure out how an Indiana prison inmate was able to obtain a cell phone and coordinate the activities of the meth trafficking organization operating in Terre Haute.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Bradley A. Blackington said Thursday that Wesley S. Hammond Jr., 39, an inmate in the New Castle Correctional Institution, was using the contraband cell phone to communicate with his girlfriend in Terre Haute.

That girlfriend, Jennifer Poltrock, 28, was included in the indictment and is charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. She allegedly served as Hammond’s lieutenant in Terre Haute and distributed methamphetamine and marijuana to drug dealers who worked for Hammond.

Hammond’s primary methamphetamine dealers allegedly included Dustin M. McCombs, 22, David J. Pitts, 39, Bradley S. Shelton, 34, and Jwuan Moreland, 35, all of Terre Haute, and Antrio D. Hammond, 31, of Indianapolis, who is Wesley Hammond’s brother.

Those suspects were included in the indictment along with Rae Anna Johnson, 65, Keith C. Pitts, 19, John Mikolajczyk, 41, Jeffrey L. Denny, 34,  Megan E. Samuels, 21, Michael E. Adkins, 26, Herbert D. Phipps, 53, Ahmad Hadi, 50, Dennis D. Plummer, 36, Melissa Van Ness, 36, Timothy Bailey, 48, and Susie Annette Smith, all of Terre Haute. Smith is Hammond’s mother.

All 19 defendants are charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. In addition, Shelton is charged with a separate count of distribution of methamphetamine.

Blackington explained that this meth distribution ring formed to fill a gap in the local supply chain that occurred after the December 2008 indictment and arrest of the Robin Welker/Vicki Shaw meth ring that saw 20 people arrested on federal drug charges.

“We have information that the day after that takedown [Welker/Shaw], there was a meeting by this group on how to fill the demand,” Blackington said.

“We hope this has a big impact on the availability of meth,” he said, noting that the source of the drug was out of state. However, he noted that just as in the months following the takedown of the Welker/Shaw meth ring, police expect to see an increase in the number of “mom and pop” meth labs as local addicts try to make their own drugs in clandestine labs.

“You would think that after several years of us doing these cases that people would think twice about it,” Blackington said of the organized meth rings.

The investigation into Hammond’s organization began last fall, Blackington said, and it came together around Dec. 30 when an informant made a controlled purchase of drugs from Shelton.

Blackington estimated the ring was dealing 10 to 15 pounds of meth per month, which was more than the Welker/Shaw ring. The organization also began dealing a large quantity of marijuana when members realized their meth trafficking operation was being noticed by authorities, he said.

Hammond was sentenced to 15 years in prison in April 2008 on a Vigo County conviction for dealing cocaine. He also had prior convictions for dealing cocaine.

How he came into possession of the cell phone while in prison is a concern for the Department of Correction.

DOC Spokesman Doug Garrison told the Tribune-Star that cell phone trafficking is a big problem at the state’s prison facilities.

There have been instances of people wrapping cell phones in duct tape and concealing them inside a body cavity, throwing cell phones over the prison walls for inmates to retrieve, and prison staff have occasionally been known to traffic in cell phones, Garrison said.

All facilities routinely conduct shakedowns of cells and dorm areas, he said, but the availability of the small devices, as well as their chargers, is an ongoing problem.

Hammond is believed to have sent many text messages from prison.

“We’ve examined the phone records and usage,” Blackington told media during a press conference at Terre Haute Police headquarters, “and he was using the cell phone much more than I do, and much more than probably anyone else in this room does. If there’s anywhere you shouldn’t be able to run a meth ring from, it’s a prison.”

He indicated, however, that once investigators learned that Hammond possessed the phone, that information was used to further the investigation.

The investigation led to the following drug and currency seizures in the Terre Haute area:

• Two ounces of methamphetamine allegedly purchased from Shelton on Dec. 30.

• One ounce of methamphetamine allegedly seized from Hadi on March 22.

• One ounce of methamphetamine allegedly seized from Mikolajczyk on March 23.

• Five ounces of methamphetamine allegedly seized from Shelton on March 26.

• Ten pounds of marijuana allegedly seized from Bailey on March 26.

• 210 pounds of marijuana and 11 ounces of methamphetamine allegedly seized from the South 14th Street home of Poltrock on March 26.

• $80,880 allegedly seized from the North 16th Street residence of Smith on March 26.

Law enforcement officers from the region participated in the execution of arrest and search warrants.

Most of the defendants, if convicted, face maximum possible sentences of life imprisonment.

New Years Resolutions

I am not normally one to make New Year's Resolutions, but this year as a married women I decided to give it a try. I was trying marriage in the 2011, so why not something else. They are as follows:

1. No Starbucks during the week.
2. Become a better tourist in my own town

Here's an update on what and where I have been so far.

1. I blew this one pretty quick. I barely made it to Feb. That being said, I have switched drinks. I have gone from a Latte, to a Misto. I got this idea from reading a blog. Now, I like the Misto a little better and.....it is cheaper. My drink was $5.02 or $4.98 (depending on which county I was in), OMG that sounds so hickish/jappy. Anyway.... I love a deal.  I feel like a won the lottery with every order. As if to say, ha ha Starbucks I have you figured out. Yeah right,  I am still over paying for coffee.

2. I am doing really well here and in fact I have sort of taken being a tourist in Indy, to broader definition: Doing things I have not done before. I am grateful for this as it has helped to force myself to get outside of the box and do things I would have otherwise not committed to. I am happy to say, it has made me happier and dare I say it, more laid back.  Below are some of the things I have done:

1. Started a blog, just for me no one else so I can remember 2011 when I am old.
2. Tried Yoga. I thought I hated it, but I tried Bikram and loved it!
3. Went early to my National Sales Meeting and stayed with Heather and Todd of the Cutter Family. Normally, I would not have bothered. Although, I LOVED ST. AUG when I was there in Nov and wanted to go back. I was greatly rewarded with new experiences (YOGA!), meeting new people, and some good old fun.
4. Went to Miami with my high school girls. Very little drama and a lot of fun! Also bought the Tom Ford glasses I have wanted for forever!!!!
5. Took Mom to Chicago. KK planned an awesome weekend. I have never had so much fun with just my Mom and sister.
6. Bought swimming "toys". Courtney helped me with stroke technique and I loved it so much...I bought  a kick board, paddles, and buoy all wrapped up in a pretty pink bag. I feel so official.
7. Got certified to teach Spinning. I have talked about this for forever and finally did it. Now...just to find a place to teach. Stayed Tuned.
8. Tried New Restaurants:
   *Mesh On Mass
   *3 Wiseman
   *Coopers Hawk
9. This one shall go un named for a little while longer, but something new I did not expect!

I am sure there are things I am missing now that is March and I am just writing this down. Although, I have to admit. I am very excited about it all and thrilled I challenged myself!
